Roberts Pilots Mentorship Program for BIPOC Students
Starting in February 2021, Roberts will pilot a new graduate and undergraduate mentor program for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) students. Based on internal enrollment data, the pilot program will first focus on mentorship of BIPOC undergraduate students in two popular fields of study—psychology and social work.
Nineteen BIPOC graduate students across the psychology and social work departments have signed on as mentors for the pilot program, which aims to instill a culture of connectedness and belonging on campus and increase retention and graduation rates among undergraduate students. Mentors will empower and equip students with guidance and resources critical to fostering their educational experience and success at Roberts and in post-graduate endeavors.
The program, led by Dr. Sonnette M. Bascoe, assistant professor of psychology, aligns with Roberts’ continued commitment to championing diversity, equity, inclusion and facilitating a campus culture where all people feel safe, valued and empowered through education and advocacy.
