Student Spotlight: Jake Landean’22 (Cross-Disciplinary)

Jake Landean

Leadership, Learning Languages, and Ultimate Frisbee

This week, we're shining the spotlight on Jacob (Jake) Landean, a Cross-Disciplinary student who combines his love of leadership, community, and ultimate frisbee. Jake’s studies focus on Business, Religion and Philosophy, and Social Sciences.

What is the best thing about studying your major?

I love the variety of classes I get to take!

For example, Organizational Leadership (taught by Jamarr Myers) helped me become more of a leader in the workplace.

For Religion and Philosophy, I took Intro to Christian Theology (taught by Dr. McPherson) and that taught me more about the diverse range of opinions about God and Christianity I never knew about before. We dove deep into other beliefs with an open mind.

In Social Sciences, I took Ethnic and Social Diversity, and I loved learning about the differences between Hispanic and Latino cultures.

What course has been your favorite and why?

So far, my favorite class has been taking Biblical Hebrew for a year and a half with Dr. Kristin Helms. I loved it because it was a new way of learning a new language. I was able to learn about what the Bible originally said when it was first written.

Being able to read and understand the Bible in its original language lets me fully understand what was written and allows me to have my own opinion.

What are your favorite things about being co-captain of the ultimate frisbee team and the sport itself?

Ultimate frisbee is my passion.. I love being able to teach others something that I love. I think the reason why I gravitated towards it so much is that I felt naturally good at the sport. It is the sport that I can play anytime, anywhere. All I need is an open field and a frisbee.

What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?

Say YES. Saying yes has led me to make so many memories and friends. Some of my closest friends have thanked me for pushing them to say yes because it has made their college experience so much better. You never know what will happen when you say yes. Get out of your comfort zone!
