Experiential Learning for Roberts Art Students Featured as a "Bright Spot" on 13WHAM
A local Rochester artist is collaborating with Roberts Wesleyan University students to create art pieces for the Golisano Community Engagement Center that will open in January 2023. The artist, Shawn Dunwoody, began working with the students this semester on the project which includes a featured piece from Dunwoody and eight student works of art reflecting people, symbolism, connection and the message of lifting each other up.
Dunwoody met with students for a visit to his Exchange Street studio and discussion of the project. Students and Dunwoody then proceeded on tour of the historic and contemporary highlights of the downtown Rochester area. Of particular interest to both students and Dunwoody were several buildings and monuments including the Susan B. Anthony - Frederick Douglas bridge and the arched structural spaces under the bridges and along the riverfront canals and aqueducts The artist spent several hours with the students discussing and documenting interesting spaces, structures and graffiti which has made its way in various forms into their emerging visual works.
The students are learning about abstract art, different mediums of art and working collaboratively and creatively on artwork. The project, led by Professor of Art Scot Bennet, will be completed in December.
