Roberts to host "¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina!" on April 22
“I am unique! I am Latina!” event empowers young Latina women.
On Saturday, April 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Roberts Wesleyan University will proudly host the ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! (SUSL) rally, an event that empowers young Latina women, encouraging them to develop self-confidence and celebrate their heritage. The event is open to young Latinas ages seven to 17; however, participants 13 or younger must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or authorized adult.
"¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina!" translates to “I am unique! I am Latina!” and serves as a public education initiative, led by Latinas Unidas, that is meant to inspire and empower young Latina women, encouraging them to develop a strong sense of character and become proud leaders in their community.
At the start of the event, the girls participate in a pep rally, led by a “Madrina” (Godmother), and hear from successful Latina women sharing their personal and professional experiences. As this year’s Rally falls on Earth Day, the theme is “La Tierra y Yo” (Earth and Me). Throughout the day, participants attend workshops broken out by age, which will primarily focus on care for our environment. The day’s events culminate in a “Quinceañera finale” fashion show.
"Roberts Wesleyan University is delighted to once again host the ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! Rally,” said Lisa Martinez DeVinney, Associate Director for Corporate Partners & Transfer Pathways at Roberts Wesleyan University. “This inspiring event is an ideal fit with Roberts mission of service that positively transforms society. Roberts is committed to our community and to organizations such as Latinas Unidas who prioritize empowerment, cultural pride, and personal growth for Latina youth.”
The SUSL initiative was introduced to Rochester in 2002 by the Catholic Family Center and has been led by Latinas Unidas since 2004. Each year, the event is hosted by a local college or university in Rochester and part of the day’s schedule includes a tour of the college or university hosting the event.
The event is free and open to the public, however, registration is required in advance. For more information about the event or to register, click here.
