Ruth Logan Memorial Garden Dedication

The color pink symbolizes love and compassion. Pink is kind, comforting, brings joy in our lives and nurtures us. Ruth Logan was that type of person.

The Ruth Logan memorial garden was dedicated on June 10 with faculty, staff, former employees, Ruth's immediate family, extended family and friends of the Logan's present. President Porterfield welcomed guests and shared comments. Mark Logan, Ruth's husband, shared some words on behalf of the family, and Pastor Wally Fleming gave the closing and prayer of dedication.

In Ruth’s 30 years at Roberts (1990-2020) she served in the Office of Development, as the Director of Human Resources, Vice President for Administration, Vice President for Student and Organizational Development and a member of the President’s Cabinet (2004-2020).

Her leadership roles were numerous and varied, spanning from the management of employees, to student life, to athletics, leading the emergency response team (including COVID), to serving as the Chief Diversity officer, and of course our resident Roberts history and archive keeper.

She loved all things Roberts, and was passionately devoted to the high calling and mission of transformational Christian education. She was both an advocate and ambassador for people, using her voice and role to support, clarify, mentor and encourage those she worked with. She also had the gift of hospitality, welcoming all who walked this campus.

"If you spent any time with Ruth you quickly learned that her ability to orchestrate gatherings was a God-given gift. She had a love for many things and flowers and gardens would be at the top of the list," said President Porterfield. "We had many conversations about her flowers, about noticing the amazing uniqueness of color and design, and knowing the names of each one," she added.

This memorial garden is a connection to Ruth’s innate ability to cheer and encourage people in their work by truly knowing the individual gifts and talents of each person as well as the diversity, wonder and uniqueness of each person. This sentiment was evident in her love for the uniqueness and beauty of each flower she planted and nurtured in her lifetime.

This space on this campus honors her deep commitment to the people of this community and acknowledges her love of flowers and gardening. There is a nod to “pink” in honor of Ruth’s favorite color. The plaque inscription is:
