Redhawks Who Soar - July 2023
We are proud of the 21,114 living alumni who are working in the fields of healthcare, social work, business, education, criminal justice, ministry, non-profits, the technology industry and entrepreneurship – just to name a few. This month we celebrate new opportunities and awards for these alumni!
Robert “Bobby” Sandel ‘57 (Math and Physics) published his first book, “Bobby Please Come Inside.” “It is a memoir I wrote from taking classes at the University of Alabama thru the Osher Life Learning Institute,” said Sandel.
The story is about Bobby and his brother living in an orphanage for ten years. The book includes some experiences as a student at Roberts (1952 - 1957). To read more about the book or to buy it visit https://bookstore.dorrancepublishing.com/bobby-please-come-inside/.
Natasha Walsh ‘13 (Music, Vocal Performance) is the Director of Development and Communications at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College in Barry's Bay, Ontario. She began this new role in July. Read the story.
Emily Gisleson ‘15 (Strategic Leadership, M.S.) recently started at Baldwin Richardson Foods as a Talent Acquisition Coordinator.
Jordan Sullivan ‘21 (Business Administration) is the Flower City Union (FCU) Head Coach. Sullivan is a London, UK native who played soccer at Roberts Wesleyan University. He is in his second year at FCU and is working on establishing an identity based on community engagement. FCU is part of the third-tier National Independent Soccer Association and is Rochester's only active professional men’s soccer team.
“So it's imperative that the coaching staff get it right on the field and start producing results, we start getting points on the board, we start winning games,” said Sullivan. Read the story.
Diane Hewitt-Johnson ‘07 (Strategic Leadership, M.S.) was recently elected to serve as vice president on the state Community Action Association (NYSCAA) board of directors. Having served as an NYSCAA board member since June 2022, Hewitt-Johson provides input into the State Plan, provides representation at the state and regional levels, and advocates for Community Action Agencies. She is the Chief Executive Officer at Chautaqua Opportunities, Inc., and has been with the organization for over 20 years. Read the story.
Ashley Guarino ‘10 (Master of Education-CSPEDI) was recently appointed the Red House Administrator for Churchville-Chili CSD Middle School. She has been with the district since 2010. Read the story.
Nina Fernandez Smith ‘07 (Communication) was recently promoted to the Dean of Students at BASIS Independent McLean in McLean, Virginia. BASIS Independent Schools is a network of private schools that focuses on preparing students to be among the top in the world by raising the standards of student learning to the highest international levels. Nina received her Master’s in Education in Curriculum and Instruction from George Mason University while working for Teach For America after graduating from Roberts. For the past 15 years, she has focused on educational equity and reform. Smith taught early childhood language and was a literacy educator with DC Public Schools, KIPP DC, and BASIS Independent McLean. She looks forward to using her experience in her new role as Dean of Students.
