Student Spotlight: Chloe Shaffer ‘25 (Nursing)
Where are you from?
I am from a small rural town in northern New Jersey.
What do you see yourself doing as a career?
I see myself as a nurse. To be honest, I'm not sure where God is calling me to be when it comes to what kind of nurse but I do know I have a heart for medical missions.
How will your Roberts education help you reach those goals?
My Roberts education has done so much for me through learning beyond just academics. I have learned about a servant's heart and my academic and personal experiences at Roberts have expanded my concept of empathy.
What is the best thing about studying your major?
I honestly love clinical and spending time working in the hospital. I am applying what I have learned in my nursing training before I graduate. The encouragement of my professors has been consistent and I have comfort in knowing they always have my back.
What course (so far) has been your favorite and what do you love most about it?
My favorite course at Roberts has been my Health Assessment class. I loved that it was my first nursing class where I felt like I was learning hands-on how to be a nurse. I also love the professor, Laura Coles, who brought her mission background into assessment and used many real-life stories to expand the lecture.
Who is your favorite professor and what’s one way they’ve helped you?
My favorite professor is my academic advisor Sharon Kurtz, Clinical Instructor for the Traditional Nursing Program. I honestly struggle in lectures but I excel in lab and clinical where the lessons are hands-on. During one of our meetings, she looked at me and said "You're going to make an amazing nurse one day, Chloe. You just have to get through the academics." This gave me the inspiration to keep going and end that semester on a much brighter note.
How do you serve others?
I serve others mainly through the lens of leadership on campus as a Resident Assistant and as the President of a ministry on campus, but in a practical sense, I love to serve others by listening and encouraging. I love hearing others' stories and being able to tell them how I see them through my eyes. Often they are much stronger than they think they are.
What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?
I would tell incoming freshmen not to put all their eggs in one basket. Try all the new things that interest you (without forgetting about your classes of course). Don't be afraid to do and try things even if your friends aren't there. I promise that you will meet so many amazing people no matter where you go on campus.
What is your favorite thing about Rochester?
I love all the fun coffee shops and farmers' markets in Rochester.
What academic or professional accomplishments are you most proud of?
Honestly, I'm most proud of the community I've been able to build with my peers at Roberts. Between the ministry I started with one of my best friends, Alexa Carney, to the many areas of campus I've been able to help lead as an RA, I am proud of the relationships I've been able to help foster across campus.
What’s it like being one of the Presidents of Roc SOLID?
I love being the President of Rochester- Sharing Our Lives In Discipleship Ministry on campus because I was able to create the community I wanted to see. On the weekend a lot of people go home and I am from N.J. so it is not a weekend trip. I was able to come together and create a ministry that participates in outreach, shares testimonies, and shares life together which are some of my favorite ways to build community.
One thing you love about being an RA?
I love being able to pour into my residents, specifically during times of need. An RA has its challenges but I can tackle those because I have built a rapport with my residents.
