Students Volunteer for MLK Day of Service
Students from Roberts Wesleyan University, University of Rochester and Nazareth University volunteered on Saturday, Jan. 27, as part of RochesterCares’ annual MLK Day of Service. The day of service began with a kickoff event at East High School, with volunteers dispersing to several service project sites throughout the community.
"Roberts students gave their time and effort and were inspired by Dr. King's commitment to serving those in need and answering the question, "What are you doing for others?" It was so great to see them working alongside students from other area universities serving in the Rochester community,” said Associate Dean of Student Leadership and Engagement Celeste Donleavy '04, 09 (Childhood and Special Education, MS in Education, Literacy Specialist). “The area colleges were also blessed by Roberts student, Ruth Michel, who performed the song, We Shall Overcome, during the King For a Day program at East High School. ”
King for a Day is part of the nationally recognized MLK Day of Service, encouraging Americans nationwide to volunteer in King’s honor. In Rochester, volunteers participated in service projects at more than 50 sites throughout the community. At Roberts, students served at community-based agencies and nonprofit organizations throughout the Greater Rochester area involved in the celebration.
