Student Spotlight: Nicole Deeb, Occupational Therapy Doctorate Program, Capstone Project
This spotlight shines on Nicole Deeb '24, who is in the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program, and her capstone project. This project is a transformative experience that allows her to integrate academic learning into a comprehensive, evidence-based project.
In the capstone project, students are required to demonstrate their expertise in their chosen area of focus and prepare for future leadership roles within the field. The experience helps prepare students for the challenges and opportunities in their careers as occupational therapy practitioners.
Parkinson's disease is characterized by a range of motor and non-motor symptoms that can significantly impact daily life and occupations. By incorporating exercise into occupational therapy, Deeb's project aims to maintain residents' endurance, balance, and overall physical function, which the disease affects.
"The benefits of the program, 'Park'N Move,' are multifaceted. Additionally, exercise has been proven to positively affect mood, cognition, quality of life, and overall well-being, potentially offering a holistic approach to managing Parkinson's disease in the community," said Program Director and Associate Professor Dr. Kathleen Stoklasa. "Nicole hopes to make this program sustainable in her local area and grow 'Park'N Move' to its fullest potential."
