Students Share: Why I Chose Roberts

For who you are becoming and what you’ll do, is Roberts Wesleyan University the right choice for you?

To gain insights into why students choose our university and their first-year experience, we spoke with Jenna, a Mathematics major from Churchville, N.Y. Jenna's family has a strong connection to the university, as her father is an alumnus and two siblings are alumni or current students. Following in their footsteps, she enrolled at Roberts and just completed her freshman year. Let's learn more about her decision to attend and her impressions so far.

What stood out to you when you visited the campus for the first time? Was there an "aha" moment?

The first time I ever visited campus I was very very young. I came to watch my dad, Barry Northrup, play in the alumni game for Men’s Soccer. I remember watching him play and being excited for my future. I remember going to a basketball game and just loving the atmosphere of the fans and players during the game. I would say my “aha” moment was thinking about going here in the future from such a young age.

How did your family's experience at Roberts impact your decision to choose Roberts?

My brother, sister, and dad have all gone or are currently enrolled at Roberts. Having my family at Roberts interested me in selecting the university, but the icing on the cake was getting a roster spot for the Women’s Soccer team. I wanted to stay close to home and going to Roberts allowed me to stay close to my family and my high school friends.

How is your Roberts academic experience helping you to explore your program of study?

Through my academic experience, I have tried all the sections of my math major. I have even been able to try some other classes that interested me such as astronomy and criminal justice.

Can you share one academic quality or skill that you have developed as a result of your education so far?

I have learned how to program with Python which I thought I would never learn since programming wasn’t a big interest of mine.

Has there been a faculty member who has shepherded you or mentored you for Christian worldview integration?

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Karen Scheske, Associate Professor of Computer Science Anthony Petrillo, and Professor of Philosophy Dr. Andrew Koehl have been the most influential professors through the Christian worldview. They have been very good about encouraging students and giving them the opportunity to understand faith and academics.
