Student Voices, Better Choices: Collaborating on Residence Hall Updates

Roberts Wesleyan University is buzzing with excitement as major renovations are underway, transforming the student living spaces. The standout feature of this project is the strong emphasis on student collaboration throughout the planning and execution phases.

The Facilities team held a listening tour, gathering valuable input from students on how to enhance the space. This feedback played a significant role in shaping the design and layout.

This collaborative approach included multiple sessions with architects, engineers, and students to refine the concepts. As part of this inclusive approach, the Facilities team presented four design options for student feedback, ensuring their voices were heard throughout the development process.

This two-year project started with Updyke Hall renovations that began in May 2024. The second phase will begin next May, aiming to complete Magill and Miner Halls in time for the 2025-2026 school year.

By the end of the project, 72 dorm rooms and multiple common areas across Updyke, Magill, and Miner Halls and the Quads will be fully renovated. Lounges in every suite are being upgraded with new furniture to enhance comfort and community living.

Updyke Hall is undergoing a complete overhaul, including reconfiguring common areas like bathrooms, showers, kitchens, and lounges. The renovation will introduce individual bathrooms and communal kitchens designed to foster fellowship. The heating systems will be integrated into the university's Building Management System (BMS), ensuring optimal temperature control. Each room will have its own wireless access point, improving Wi-Fi connectivity. Rooms will also be equipped with hookups for gaming consoles.

Sustainability is a priority. SWBR and M/E Engineering, companies which Roberts has worked with for over 25 years, are specifying eco-friendly materials. Certain materials, such as the carpet, were chosen for their reduced or zero carbon footprint.

The transformation happening at Roberts Wesleyan University is a collective effort, showcasing the power of student voices in shaping their living environment. With these improvements, we’re creating spaces where students can flourish, connect, and lead with confidence.

As we progress, we will share more updates. Stay tuned!
