Roberts Wesleyan University Helps NY Office of Mental Health to Advance Nurses' Education
On Thursday, July 11, Roberts Wesleyan University spent the day at the Central New York Psychiatric Center in Marcy, N.Y. Dean of the School of Nursing, Dr. Annemarie Dowling-Castronovo, Director of the RN-BS Program and Assistant Professor of Nursing Patricia Myers, Assistant Director of Recruiting & Admissions Stephen Robson, and Student Success Advisor & Program Manager James Blake made the site visit to share about Roberts Wesleyan University’s RN to BS program to prospective students.
The Office of Mental Health (OMH) operates psychiatric centers across New York. It promotes mental health, focusing on hope and recovery for adults with serious mental illness and children with serious emotional disturbances. The Central New York Psychiatric Center (CNYPC) is a comprehensive mental health service delivery system providing a full range of care and treatment to persons incarcerated in the New York State and County Correctional Systems.
The Admissions team met with OMH Registered Nurses (RNs) to share information on the Roberts’ nursing programs, including our RN to BS program. For some nurses, taking the next step to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Nursing is a licensure mandate. For others, it is a choice for professional development. Prospective students shared their motivations for pursuing further Nursing education and the impact this opportunity could have on their lives and careers.
Dr. Annemarie Dowling-Castronovo met with Maxine Smalling, Chief Executive Nursing Officer, New York State Office of Mental Health to explore innovative programming as a sign of commitment to adult students who are balancing work, family, finances, and coursework to professionally advance care of people with mental illness. “This is not just an opportunity for a degree; it’s an opportunity for character, skill, and confidence development,” said Dowling-Castronovo. “We are excited to give OMH’s nurses the opportunity to help lead advancements in patient care by completing degrees in nursing while working.”
