Roberts Wesleyan Field Hockey: Coach Kocher Building a Program from Scratch
In April 2023, Roberts Wesleyan University took a bold step into the world of field hockey by hiring Marissa Kocher as the program's first-ever head coach. Just over a year later, Coach Kocher reflects on the whirlwind journey: "Happy to be in year two."
As expected, the inaugural season in 2023 was challenging for any new program. The team faced tough competition, ending with a 1-11 record and a -100 goal differential. However, the foundation was laid for future success.
With a full offseason to recruit, Coach Kocher brought in nine freshmen to bolster the program. The results are already showing. In the first three games of the 2023 season, the Redhawks were outscored 31-0. That margin has significantly improved this year to 6-1 through the same number of games.
The team's rapid improvement hasn't gone unnoticed. Other coaches and local schools have congratulated the program on its progress. Coach Kocher acknowledges the importance of this support: "It's harder to see it when you're in it. Those people have definitely been the community that surrounded us, pushing us to where we need to go and continuing to celebrate us."
As the 2024 season progresses, Roberts Wesleyan Field Hockey continues to build on its foundation, eagerly anticipating that breakthrough first win of the campaign.
