Roberts Wesleyan University Hosted “Smash the Stigma” Event for Student-Athletes to “Smash” Mental Health Stigmas
Roberts Wesleyan University hosted its “Smash the Stigma” event – for the first time ever – for its student-athletes on Oct. 26. At the event, students smashed over 100 pumpkins to show support of their own and their teammates and peers mental health and ultimately smash negative stigmas of mental health – in the classroom, in the gym, on the court, in the field and out in their communities.
"The event was a "smashing" hit with 60 participants and spectators," said Director of Wellness Lindsay Brooks. Whether or not students struggle with their mental health, participating in the event was a way to show their support to teammates and peers for their understanding of mental health struggles. Roberts provided mental health resources and giveaways to support ongoing awareness of mental health and resources.
The University’s Wellness Center has been partnering more with the Athletic Department to bring awareness to mental health and campus resources, specifically for athletes. Statistically, athletes are more reluctant to seek help while they are at the same, if not greater, risk of experiencing mental health challenges.
