Robert J. Miller ’54, 82, of Sylvania Road, Slippery Rock, passed away the night of December 29, 2016 at his daughter’s residence. Born December 22, 1934 in New Castle, he was the son of Jefferson A. and Ruby Mae Young Miller. Surviving at home is his wife of 59 years, Joan Velma Rogers Miller, whom he married on June 21, 1957. Robert attended Roberts Wesleyan College and was a graduate of Clarion University. He received his certification in Comprehensive Science, enabling him to teach any of the sciences. Until his retirement in 1991, Robert was employed with Laurel High School as a teacher and head of the Science Department, as well as director of the school planetarium. He was also a surveyor’s assistant and crew chief.

In addition to his interests in genealogy, botany, and animal husbandry, he enjoyed photography and gardening. He previously was the owner of a Christian book store in Brookville, PA. He was a member of Faith Country Chapel. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Stephanie J. Nye, of Utica, Pa; two sons, Robert J. Miller, Jr., of New Castle and Michael W. Miller of Slippery Rock, Pa.; two brothers, David J. Miller of Penfield, Pa, and Kurt W. Miller of Volant, Pa; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Sarah Grace Nye.
