Frequently Asked Questions

Physics, when put simply, is the study of matter and energy.

It is a natural science that seeks to understand the fundamental principles governing the universe’s matter and energy. It aims to explain the behavior of the physical world. Subtopics within physics include mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, quantum, and relativity.

A physicist is someone who studies the universe, including its matter and energy.

There are 3 categories of physicists:

  • Theoretical physicists create and apply theories to understand and explain phenomena.
  • Experimental physicists conduct research to test hypotheses and theories.
  • Applied physicists apply the findings of theoretical and experimental physicists. These applications aim to solve problems in society, whether in technology, science, or elsewhere.

A Roberts physics degree involves a combination of physics, math, and computer science courses.

Physics majors at Roberts will also have the opportunity to participate in the Society of Physics Chapter, independent research opportunities, and take courses at other Rochester area institutions.

According to the US Bureau of Labor, the median annual wage for physicists was $152,430 in 2021, though it’s noted that they must have a master’s or doctoral degree.

Naturally, the numbers will differ by area, business, level, and position.
