Medical Excuse Policy

The Wellness Center excuse policy is consistent with the recommendations from the American College Health Association to encourage appropriate use of health care services, maintain confidentiality, and support communication between professor and student.

Students are responsible for adhering to the faculty member absence policy. It is the purview of the faculty to ascertain when or if a student will be excused from class.

The Health Center will only provide a medical notification if the situation meets all the following conditions:

  • Illness or condition is measured as medically significant by the Health Center provider before the class or exam was missed
  • A student’s personal physician may at any time issue an excused absence, claiming extra precautions and restrictions. This must be in the form of written instruction and provided to the Health Center for verification.
  • If a student will be absent for 3 or more days, the Health Center will notify Student Life of student’s legitimate absence to inform the faculty. Written documentation from an external medical provider must be provided to the Health Center.

The Health Center does not provide excuses for students who miss class due to illness or injury.

  • Minor illnesses that do not prevent a student from going to class.
  • Musculoskeletal conditions (such as minor ankle injuries, wrist sprains, etc.)
  • Requesting an excused note for verifications of illness after the illness is over or after missing a class or exam.
  • A class or an exam missed for an appointment at the Health Center.

Special Diets

A student on a medically prescribed diet must submit documentation to Rhonda Lanni, Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities. Email Lanni_Rhonda@roberts.edu or call (585) 594-6494.
