Students completing the Adolescence Education Physics program are prepared to apply for New York State teaching certification in Physics for grades 7-12 (with an extension in Physics for grades 5-6). They also have the option of completing requirements for dual certification in Adolescence Education Physics 7-12, and Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist. Students are also prepared to pursue graduate study in education, physics, or related disciplines. All Adolescence Education Physics students are assigned an advisor in the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics as well as an advocate in the Teacher Education Department. Consultation with both advisor and advocate is essential to ensure program requirements and application deadlines for both departments are met.
SPECIFICS OF THE ADOLESCENCE EDUCATION PHYSICS B.S. DEGREE
Minimum Total Hours: 124
Total Liberal Arts Hours: 60
General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Council). Exceptions: only one fine arts course is required (ART 101, MUS 104, OR FNA 102); PSY 203 must be taken to meet the behavioral science requirement. Requirements for the lab science and mathematics proficiency will be met through the major.
Minimum Requirements: GPA of 2.7 in the major and overall; no grade less than C in the major; a minimum grade of C+ in 100-level EDU courses; a minimum grade of B- in levels 200 and above EDU courses; minimum grade of C in CMC 101 and CMP 101; minimum grade of C in mathematics proficiency course (within the major).

Application to the Major: Standard institutional application form to be submitted to the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics at the end of the sophomore year. A minimum overall GPA of 2.7 is required to be accepted and to remain in the major. In addition, students must apply to the Teacher Education Department after completing two EDU courses (usually EDU 185 and EDU 195) and must apply to student teach by the appropriate deadline. Contact the Teacher Education Department for specific deadlines and forms.
Major Requirements: 46 hours as follows:
- 30 hours of physics courses: PHY 201*, 202, 203, 401; 6 hours physics electives; and 9 hours of 300-/400-level physics electives;
- 4 hours computer science: CSC 140;
- 12 hours mathematics: MTH 281*, 282, 283.
Students who are pursuing Adolscense Education Physics for grades 7-12 (with an extension in Physics for grades 5-6) are also required to complete a 39-hour core of education courses (EDU 185, 195 & 195 OPE, 235, 260, 294, 357 & 357 OPE, 360 & 360 OPE, 385 & 385 OPE, PSY 203 Lab, 402A & 402B, 442); Training in Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment; and Training in School Violence Prevention and Intervention. Students must also complete 100 hours of fieldwork, called observation-participation experience (OPE).
Students who are pursuing dual certification in Adolescence Education Physics for grades 7-12 and Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist are required to complete a 48-hour core of education courses, including courses for teaching content to students with disabilities (EDU 185, 195 & 195 OPE, 235, 294, 357 & 357 OPE, 360 & 360 OPE, 365 & 365 OPE, 385 & 358 OPE, 390, PSY 203 Lab, HST 361, LIT 361, 402A & 402B, 442); Training in Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment; and Training in School Violence Prevention and Intervention. Students pursuing dual certification must complete 150 hours of fieldwork, called observation-participation experience (OPE).
