Physical Education, B.S.

The Physical Education major is offered through the Department of Physical Education and the Division of Teacher Education.  It provides pedagogical opportunities and experiences for students who are interested in obtaining certification to teach physical education and coach in public and private elementary and secondary schools.  This program of study leads to New York State provisional teaching and coaching certification for Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12.

SPECIFICS OF THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION B.S. DEGREE

Minimum Total hours: 129

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 60

General Education Requirements:   Per General Education list (see General Education Council). Exceptions: FNA 102 (only one course is required and ART 101 and MUS 104 are not permitted); PSY 101 must be taken to meet the behavioral science requirement; GEO 201 must be taken to meet the history, economics, or social sciences requirement; BIO 101 with lab must be taken to meet the lab science requirement; MTH 200 must be taken to meet the mathematics proficiency requirement; Special PED 100 section for Phsycial Education majors must be taken; the physical education skills requirement is met through the major.

Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.7; no grade less than C in 30 of the 41-43 credit hours of PPE major content related courses (BIO, PED, and PPE courses that are not methods courses); no grade less than a C- in the remaining 11-13 credit hours in the PPE major content related courses; no grade less than C+ in 100 level EDU/PPE methods courses; no grade less than B- in 200 and above level EDU/PPE methods courses (PPE 310, 315, 320, 325, 330, and 451); minimum grade of C in CMC 101, CMP 101, and MTH 200.

Application to the Major:  A minimum overall GPA of 2.7 is required to be accepted and to remain in the major.  It is extremely important for students to follow all stated guidelines, policies, and progressions in order to be admitted to and remain enrolled in the Teacher Education Program.  See Admission to Teacher Education Programs at the beginning of the Division of Teacher Education section.

Major Requirements: 60 hours

  • 12 hours of biology courses: BIO 201 with lab, BIO 202 with lab, BIO 323 with lab;
  • 5 hours of physical education courses: PED 106, 125, 201, 206, 207;
  • PSY 203-Child and Adolescent Development;
  • 40 hours of professional physical education courses (PPE 150, 225, 235, 250, 260, 270, 310, 315, 320, 325, 330, 350, 360, 443, 450, and 451);
  • 95 OPE (observation and participation) hours in conjunction with PPE 315, 320, 325, and 451.

Professional Education Requirements: 22 hours

  • EDU 185;
  • EDU 195 and the corresponding 25 hours of observation/participation experience;
  • PSY 203 lab;
  • EDU 294;
  • EDU 405 A and B - Physical Education Student Teaching;
  • Training in Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment;
  • Training in School Violence Prevention and Intervention.
  • Training in Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention
  • Professional conference attendance
