Education Minor
The Education Minor requires students to complete 18 hours as specified below.
Introduction to Education (6 hours)
- EDU 185 Education in a Changing World, AND
- EDU 195 Foundations of Special Education (OPE*)
Child/Adolescent Development (3 hours)
- PSY 203 Child and Adolescent Development OR
- EDU 260 Learning and Development in Early Adolescence
Teaching and Learning (6 hours)
- EDU 235 Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment I (pre or co-requisites: EDU 185, 195), AND
- EDU 360 Creating Inclusive Learning Communities (OPE*) (prerequisite: EDU 235)
Electives (at least 3 additional hours selected from the following list)
- EDU 255 Foundations of Language & Literacy (pre or co-requisite: EDU 235)
- EDU 294 Integrated Literacy Practices Across the Curriculum (prerequisites: EDU 185, 195)
- EDU 335 Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment II (prerequisite: EDU 235)
- EDU 365 Assessment for Special Education (prerequisites: EDU 195, 235)
- EDU 390 Collaboration for Learning (prerequisite: EDU 195, 235, 365)
- CMC 306 Communication in the Classroom
Additional EDU and PPE courses taken by students who were previously majoring in Education may be used as the elective courses in the minor upon approval of the department.
*Policy regarding OPE courses
When taking a course with an OPE, students completing a minor in education will be required to meet all the course requirements, but will not be required to complete the OPE hours. Students may request to take the OPE or an alternate field experience arranged by the student with the permission of and in consultation with the course instructor, the Undergraduate Program Director, and the Coordinator of Field Experience. (Note: Alternate experiences will not meet certification requirements should a student later choose to major in education.)
