SPECIFICS OF THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE, MAJOR IN NURSING

Minimum Total Hours: 124

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 60

General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Council).  Exceptions: only one fine arts course is required (ART 101, MUS 104, OR FNA 102); must take PSY 101 for the behavioral science requirement; must take SOC 101 for the history, economics, or social sciences elective; must take MTH 200 for the mathematics requirement; the lab science requirement is met through the major.

Minimum Requirements: Minimum GPA of 2.75 in science and NSG courses and overall for uninterrupted progression in the Nursing major; students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 in all NSG courses and a minimum overall GPA of 2.75 to remain in the major; students must have an overall GPA of 2.75 and a major GPA of 2.75 to graduate; minimum grade of C in all NSG courses and in BIO 201, BIO 201 lab, BIO 202, BIO 202 lab; no grade less than C- in the remaining pre-requisite courses required for the major. Students are required to demonstrate additional competencies prior to entering clinical coursework (e.g. Mathematics). Please note, students may only re-take science courses once to raise the GPA for progression in the Nursing major.

Technical Standard Requirements: The faculty provides the following policy and procedure as a means of identifying the skills required to complete baccalaureate preparation for the practice of nursing. All individuals who study in the pre-licensure nursing program at Roberts Wesleyan College must be able to meet both the academic and technical standards, with or without reasonable accommodations.  While it is understood that student nurses continually develop their abilities, these standards are important to the success of the student. Transfer Requirements: Transfer students seeking junior year status should obtain information about the summer transfer program (consisting of NSG 205 during summer school).  To be eligible for this program, the transfer student must have completed the Nutrition, Developmental Psychology, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Anatomy and Physiology requirements. Transfer students must meet the nursing GPA requirements to be eligible for acceptance into the Nursing Major. Admission is on a space-available basis. Students are required to demonstrate additional competencies prior to admission to the major (e.g. Mathematics)

Major Requirements: 79 hours including 60 hours of required Nursing courses

  • Three sophomore-level nursing courses: NSG 202, 205,302;
  • Eight junior-level nursing courses: NSG 304, 306, 308, 312, 314, 316, 318, 319;
  • Six senior-level nursing courses: NSG 404, 406, 407, 416, 417, 450;
  • Developmental Psychology (across the lifespan): PSY 201;
  • Science courses as follows: BIO 201, 201 lab, 202, 202 lab, 301, 301 lab, CHM 114.

* Passing the math placement may be required before enrolling in some introductory courses.
