ESOL Minor

The minor in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) consists of 4 core courses and 2 additional courses chosen from a list of electives. The minor also requires 50 hours of practicum experience (called OPE, for Observation/Participation Experience). Twenty-five of the 50 hours would be met through the OPE taken concurrently with EDU 382.  The other 25 hours could be met through taking another OPE course (e.g., EDU 358, EDU 359, or EDU 394), or as a stand-alone practicum arranged through the English Language Institute.

Required courses (12 hours)

  • EDU 235 Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment I (3);
  • CMC 206 Cross-Cultural Communication (3);
  • CMC 308 Linguistics for Second Language Acquisition (3);
  • EDU 382 and EDU 382 OPE Methods of Instruction & Assessment for English Language Learners (3 + 0) – Note: only education majors will be placed in school settings to meet the OPE requirement.

Elective courses (students must take a minimum of 2 of the following courses to earn 6 additional credit hours).

To avoid “double-dipping,” education majors will take 6 credit hours of electives not already required by their program.
