Roberts Wesleyan College provides a rigorous curriculum in the sciences as preparation for various health professional programs. Students in the Pre-Physical Therapy Program typically pursue a B.S. degree with a major in Biology or Exercise Science. Students planning a career in medicine (or a related field) may major in Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, or Exercise Science. Such students need to determine the specific requirements of the health professional school or schools to which they plan to apply. They should understand that good scholarship (grade point average of 3.50 or higher) is an important prerequisite to being considered for entrance into professional schools, particularly medical school.

It is recommended that students interested in medicine (or a related health professional field) select appropriate course work in consultation with the Pre-Professional Health Advisor. The coursework will help to fulfill requirements for one of the following degree programs offered in the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences:

  • B.S. degree in Biochemistry
  • B.S. degree in Biology with Chemistry minor;
  • B.S. degree in Biomedical Sciences;
  • B.S. or B.A. degree in Chemistry with Biology minor;
  • B.S. degree in Exercise Science with additional biology and chemistry electives;
  • B.A. degree in Comprehensive Science with a concentration in either Chemistry or Biology.

Students may choose other majors to pursue at RWC while preparing for a career in the health professions.  In order to complete a major and meet the health professional program minimum requirements, the student must select courses carefully, beginning with the freshman year.  All students are encouraged to take an introductory seminar course entitled "Introduction to the Health Professions" in which health professionals will visit and describe their particular career path to the class.

The Pre-Professional Health Advisor at Roberts Wesleyan College is a member of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP).  This organization provides additional resources and meetings to advisors in order to provide accurate and updated information about all of the health professions to students.

Students should know that due to the limited openings and high academic standards necessary to gain acceptance into medical schools or other health-related schools, health care programs seek candidates who have previous experience and exposure to the health care field.  Therefore, it is important for students to participate in field experience activities outside the classroom while attending Roberts Wesleyan College.
