The Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Music offers broad musical preparation combined with a significant number courses in other disciplines of interest, such as Communication, History, Philosophy-Religion, Ministry or other non-music programs. Recent graduates have entered a variety of music careers including private teaching and music ministry as well as non-music careers including medicine, accounting and library science. Many enter graduate school.
SPECIFICS OF THE MUSIC B.A. DEGREE
Minimum Total Hours: 124
Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 90
General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Council). Exceptions: only one fine arts course is required (ARTS 1010 or FNAR 1200) and MUSC 1910, Introduction to Music, is not permitted).
A minimum of 14 additional credits of non-music general electives.
Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.0; no grade less than C- in the major.
Transfer Requirements: Audition. See institutional transfer policies.
Application to the Major: Standard institutional major application should be submitted by the end of the sophomore year. A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required to be accepted and to remain in the major. In addition, students must pass the sophomore-year performance proficiency in the applied area to be accepted to the major.
Major Requirements: 40 hours
- 12 semester hours of music theory or a combination of 9 hours of music theory and 3 hours of orchestration (MUSC 1101, MUSC 1102, MUSC 2103, MUSC 2104 or MUSC 3901)
- 4 semester hours of aural skills (MUSC 1201, MUSC 1202, MUSC 2203, MUSC 2204)
- 8 semester hours of music history and literature (MUSC 2301, MUSC 2302, MUSC 3303)
- Basic Conducting (MUSC 2401)
- 8 semesters of Music Seminar (MUSC 1900)
- 5 semester hours of applied lessons*
- 4 semester hours of ensembles*
- 6 semester hours of music electives
- Piano proficiency is required of piano majors in the B.A. program (Class Piano I-IV or until the piano proficiency exam is passed.)
*Students receiving a music major scholarship are required to participate in a major ensemble every semester and may be required to take additional semesters of applied lessons.
