SPECIFICS OF THE MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY B.S. DEGREE
Minimum Total Hours: 124 Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 62 General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Council). Exceptions: The lab science requirement is met through the major; the mathematics proficiency requirement will be met through the major by taking MATH 2400 as well as CSCI 1010. The foreign language requirement for this major is the same as for professional programs. Minimum Requirements: Overall GPA of 3.0 required for acceptance to major; GPA of 2.0 or higher required for graduation. No grade less than C- in the major. Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies. Application to the Major: During the fall of the third-year students will apply to the medical technology program. Qualified applicants will have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Major Requirements: A minimum of 53 hours of RWC coursework as follows plus hospital hours as outlined below:

In addition to these requirements, a minimum of 30 semester hours is taken at an NAACLS accredited hospital facility, after completion of the major course requirements outlined above. A typical twelve-month Clinical Training program might consist of the following:

The Four-Year Program
The first 3 years are spent taking basic science and general education classes at Roberts. All coursework must be completed before admission to clinical training. In the 4th year of the program, clinical training will be acquired at one of the following hospital affiliates; Rochester General Hospital, Rochester NY, at UPMC Chautauqua WCA Hospital in Jamestown, NY, or New York Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, NY.
Application for clinical training must be completed during the fall semester of the junior year. Acceptance to the clinical year will be based on 1) timely completion of the formal application for clinical training, 2) a minimum overall GPA of 3.00 (with preference given to those who have a GPA of 3.0 or greater in their science courses), 3) an interview with Roberts’ science faculty, and 4) an interview by the clinical lab. The selection process is competitive and the decision is made by the clinical lab in close consultation with the Department of Biological and Chemical sciences. Students not accepted to the clinical year have the option of completing a major in Biology.
All clinical training programs are accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). They conform to the Standards established by NAACLS which is sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS).
Upon successful completion of the 4th year (clinical training at the hospital), you will be awarded a B.S. in Medical Technology from RWC.
Students are then eligible to take the board of registry exam given by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Passage of this exam will result in national board certification. Graduates are also eligible for licensure through the N.Y.S. Education Department Office of the Professions.
