Spanish, B.A.

[Spanish -- 1105]

The Spanish major provides students the opportunity to gain proficiency in the second most spoken language of the international community.  Currently, more than 10% of Americans consider Spanish their first language and at least 500 million people worldwide practice fluency.  The ability to speak Spanish is becoming a helpful and even necessary part of some fields, including economics, business, medicine, social sciences, criminal justice, and ministry.  The major consists of 33 hours of upper-level Spanish courses taught by qualified, native speakers.  Professors and advisors value a broad, well-rounded understanding of the discipline.  Hence, students will gain competence not only in fundamentals of the language, including grammar, composition, and conversation, but upper-level courses will expose students to Spanish literature, cinema, theater, and culture.  Students pursuing a major in Spanish are strongly encouraged to study Spanish abroad one semester.  If not selecting the Roberts Wesleyan College-sponsored program with the University of Murcia (Spain), students must consult with the Spanish Department to secure approval of the study-abroad program desired.
