SPECIFICS OF THE BIOLOGY B.A. DEGREE

The B.A. program in Biology is a broad-based curriculum of sufficient depth to prepare students pursuing science education or careers such as laboratory technicians.

Minimum Total Hours: 124

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 90

General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Division). Exceptions: the lab science and mathematics proficiency requirements are met through the major.

Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.0; no grade less than C- in the major.

Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies.

Application to the Major: Standard institutional major application should be submitted at the end of the sophomore year.  A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required for acceptance to the major.

Major Requirements:  44 hours including coursework in biology, chemistry, computer science, and mathematics

  • 23 hours of required biology courses with supporting labs: BIO 101, 102, 301, 302, 420, 260, and 460;
  • 8 additional hours of biology through one of the following sequences: 201, 201 lab, 202, and 202 lab OR 320, 320 lab, 321, and 321 lab;
  • 8 hours of chemistry with supporting labs:  CHM 111*, 114;
  • One computer science course: CSC 101 or 140;
  • A minimum of 3 hours mathematics from the following:  MTH 185, 200, or 281*.

NOTE: BCH 100-Basic Biochemistry (3) will be required before enrolling in the major courses listed above if it is determined that remediation is needed in biology or chemistry.  MTH 099-Essentials of Mathematics III (0) will be required before enrolling in the major courses listed above if it is deemed that remediation is needed in mathematics from the math placement exam*.

SPECIFICS OF THE BIOLOGY, B.S. DEGREE

The Bachelor of Science program represents a narrower focus in one area of biology and is designed for students interested in pursuing graduate education.  The B.S. degree is also appropriate for students considering careers in medicine, dentistry or veterinary science.  A full complement of courses in the physical sciences is also required, including chemistry, physics and mathematics.  A Bachelor of Science with concentration in medical technology is also offered.  This program includes a 12-month cooperative program during the senior year at an accredited school of medical technology.

  • 33 hours of biology courses with supporting labs including: BIO 101, 102, 302, 420, 260 and 460, 495 or 498, 201 & 202 OR 320 & 321; and BCH 305;
  • 16 hours of chemistry with supporting labs:  CHM 111*, 112, 211, 212;
  • 2-4 hour computer science course: CSC 101 or 140;
  • 8 hours of physics: PHY 101* and 102, or PHY 201* and 202;
  • 3-4 hours of mathematics: MTH 185, 200, or 281*.
