Chemistry, B.A., B.S.

[Chemistry—1905]

The Bachelor of Arts degree program (30 hours of chemistry) provides a broad education foundation to prepare students for industrial employment and pre-professional training in medicine and pharmacy.  Certification for secondary education also requires the same coursework.

SPECIFICS OF THE CHEMISTRY B.A. DEGREE

Minimum Total Hours: 124

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 90

General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Division). Exceptions: the lab science and mathematics proficiency requirements are met through the major.

Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.0; no grade less than C- in the major.

Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies.

Application to the Major: Standard institutional major application should be submitted at the end of the sophomore year.  A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required for acceptance to the major.

Major Requirements: 48 hours with a minimum of 30 hours in chemistry as follows:

  • Required chemistry courses: CHM 111, 111 lab, 112, 112 lab, 121, 211, 211 lab, 212, 212 lab, 301, 301 lab, 304, 460, and 495 or 498;
  • Minimum of 2 hours in computer science: CSC 101 or 140;
  • 8 hours of mathematics: MTH 281 and 282;
  • 8 hours of physics: PHY 101 and 102 (or the 12-hour physics sequence PHY 201, 202, and 203).

NOTE: BCH 100-Basic Biochemistry (3) will be required before enrolling in the major courses listed above if it is determined that remediation is needed in biology or chemistry.  MTH 099-Essentials in Mathematics III (0) will be required before enrolling in the major courses listed above if it is deemed that remediation is needed in mathematics through the math placement exam.

 

SPECIFICS OF THE CHEMISTRY B.S. DEGREE

The Bachelor of Science degree program (38 hours of chemistry) is recommended for students who wish to pursue graduate programs, professional school programs, or industrial career fields such as pharmaceuticals, research and development, quality control, environmental monitoring, polymer synthesis, medical technology, or chemical engineering.

Minimum Total Hours: 124

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 60

General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Division); the lab science and mathematics proficiency requirements are met through the major.

Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.0; no grade less than C- in the major.

Major Requirements: 62 hours with a minimum of 38 hours in chemistry as follows:

  • Required chemistry courses: CHM 111, 111 lab, 112, 112 lab, 121, 211, 211 lab, 212, 212 lab, 301, 301 lab, 302, 302 lab, 304, 460, 498;
  • One additional 400-level chemistry course (3 hours): CHM 402, 406, or 420;
  • CSC 140;
  • 12 hours of mathematics: MTH 281, 282, and 283;
  • 8-12 hours of physics: PHY 101 and 102 OR PHY 201, 202, and 203.

NOTE: BCH 100-Basic Biochemistry (3) will be required before enrolling in the major courses listed above if it is determined that remediation is needed in biology or chemistry.  Placement into a lower level mathematics course will be required before enrolling in calculus if it is deemed appropriate by the math placement exam.
