Students completing the Adolescence Education Biology program are prepared to apply for New York State teaching certification in Biology for grades 7-12 (with an extension in Biology for grades 5-6). They also have the option of completing requirements for dual certification in Adolescence Education Biology 7-12, and Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist. Students are also prepared to pursue graduate study in education, biology, or related disciplines. All Adolescence Education Biology students are assigned an advisor in the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences as well as an advocate in the Teacher Education Department. Consultation with both advisor and advocate is essential to ensure program requirements and application deadlines for both departments are met.
SPECIFICS OF THE ADOLESCENCE EDUCATION BIOLOGY B.S. DEGREE
Minimum Total Hours: 124
Total Liberal Arts Hours: 60
General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Council). Exceptions: only one fine arts course is required (ART 101, MUS 104, OR FNA 102); PSY 203 must be taken to meet the behavioral science requirement. Requirements for the lab science and mathematics proficiency will be met through the major.
Minimum Requirements: GPA of 2.7 in the major and overall; no grade less than C in the major; minimum grade of C+ in 100-level EDU courses; minimum grade of B- in levels 200 and above EDU courses; minimum grade of C in CMC 101 and CMP 101, minimum of C in mathematics proficiency course (within the major).

Application to the Major: Standard institutional major application should be submitted to the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at the end of the sophomore year. A minimum overall GPA of 2.7 is required to be accepted and to remain in the major. In addition, students must apply to the Teacher Education Departrment after completing two EDU courses (usually EDU 185 and EDU 195) and must apply to student teach by the appropriate deadline. Contact the Teacher Education Department for specific deadlines and forms.
Major Requirements: 44 hours including coursework in biology, chemistry, computer science, and mathematics as follows:
- 19 hours in biology: BIO 111, 111 lab, 112, 112 lab, 113, 113 lab, 231, 302, 302 lab, 460
- 12 hours of BIO/BCH electives (including 3 lab sections) from:BCH 305 & 305 lab, 306, 330BIO 200, 200 lab, 301, 301 lab, 306, 306 lab, 340, 401, 401 lab, 420,420 lab, 3--/4--Au Sable courses;
- 8 hours in chemistry: CHM 111*, 111 lab, 114;
- 5 hours minimum in mathematics and computer science: MTH 185, 200, or 281*, CSC 101 or 140.
* students may be required to take a placement exam before enrollment in the course. CHM 111R may also be required based on chemistry placement indicators.
Students who are pursuing Adolescence Education Biology for grades 7-12 (with an extension in Biology for grades 5-6) are also required to complete a 38-hour core of education courses (EDU 185, 195 & 195 OPE, 235, 260, 294, 357 & 357 OPE, 360 & 360 OPE, 385 & 385 OPE, 402A & 402B, 442); in addition to four mandated training workshops: Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment; School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE); Needs of Students with Autism; and Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention (DASA). Students must also complete 100 hours of fieldwork, called observation-participation experience (OPE).
Students who are pursuing dual certification in Adolescence Education Biology for grades 7-12 and Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist are required to complete a 50-hour core of education courses, including courses for teaching content to students with disabilities (EDU 185, 195 & 195 OPE, 235, 294, 357 & 357 OPE, 360 & 360 OPE, 365 & 365 OPE, 385 & 385 OPE, 390, HST 361, LIT 361, MTH 361, 402A & 402B, 442); In addition to four mandated training workshops: Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment; School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE); Needs of Students with Autism; Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention (DASA). Students pursuing dual certification must complete 150 hours of fieldwork, called observation-participation experience (OPE).
