The Comprehensive Science major is one option for students considering teaching general sciences.

SPECIFICS OF THE COMPREHENSIVE SCIENCE B.S. DEGREE

Minimum Total Hours: 124

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 60

General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Council). Exceptions:the lab science and mathematics proficiency requirements are met through the major.

Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.0; no grade less than C- in the major.

Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies.

Application to the Major: Standard institutional major application should be submitted at the end of the sophomore year.  A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required for acceptance to the major.

Major Requirements:  52-58 hours depending on the concentration selected.

  • 3 hours of astronomy: AST 201;
  • 8 hours of biology with supporting labs:  BIO 111, 112;
  • 8 hours of chemistry with supporting labs:  CHM 111*, 114;
  • 4 hours of computer science:  CSC 140;
  • 3 hours of Earth science: ESC 101;
  • 4 hours of mathematics:  MTH 281*;
  • 8 hours of physics: PHY 101* and 102 OR PHY 201* and 202;
  • Concentration: Select additional hours in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics to total 24 semester hours in one discipline.  At least 9 hours within the concentration must be 300- or 400-level courses.

Discipline specific substitutions or requirements:

  • Biology concentration may substitute MTH 200 for 281;
  • Biology and Chemistry concentrations may substitute CSC 101 and 103 for 140;
  • Chemistry concentration must take CHM 111 and 112 and supporting labs;
  • Physics concentration must take PHY 201, 202, and 203.

* Passing a placement exam could be required before enrolling in some introductory courses. CHM 111R will be required as a corequisite if it is determined that additional support will benefit the student.
