Digital Media Art

DIGITAL MEDIA ART 

The Digital Media Art major combines an emphasis in the methods of art, design media production, and with communication arts and media theory. The program of study explores the many aspects of digital motion media, from traditional video production to the emerging fields of independent web-based content and includes television and film concepts.

In the first-year Foundations Program, students complete courses in drawing (ARTS 1020) studio foundations (ARTS 1040), digital media art (ARTS 1050); as well as Art and Design seminar (ARTS 1000) and Ways of Seeing (ARTS 2010).

After the first year, students begin work in their concentration along with elective studio art courses. Also, students study art history, theory, and criticism. Concurrently, students take courses in communication and media theory, as well as advertising and design.

The program of study culminates with an internship and either a Capstone Exhibition or Portfolio. The Capstone is an individually completed year-long faculty-mentored project in which students select and produce a body of work in art or design and prepare that work for exhibition or production.

SPECIFICS OF THE DIGITAL MEDIA ART B.S. DEGREE

Minimum Total Hours: 124

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 62

General Education Requirements: Per Core Curriculum Requirements list (see General Education CouncilExceptions: MUSC 1910/1015 or FNAR 1200 must be taken for the fine arts requirement.

Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies. Transfers who intend to major in Art must submit a portfolio and meet with faculty before beginning art courses.

Application to the Major: Submitted after successful completion of mid-program review, spring of second year.

Major Requirements: 63 hours

  • 7 hours of foundations courses during the first two semesters (ARTS 1020 or 1040, and 1050. Plus ARTS 1000-seminar)
  • 7 hours of ARTS history and theory courses (ARTS 2010, FNAR 2300, 4910, optional 2910)

  • 5 hours of Senior Capstone courses (ARTS 4960 and 4970)

  • An 18 credit hour production concentration including the following courses: ARTS 2610, ARTS 2700, ARTS 2740, ARTS 2750, ARTS 3750, and ARTS 4750.

  • 6 hours of art studio electives

  • 18 credit hours of Distribution Courses (COMM/COMD 2201, 2202, 3210, and 3310) and 6 credit hours from the following elective courses: COMM 3306, MRKT 3400, COMM 3351, COMM  4401 or approved substitutions in Business Marketing or Communication, Media, or related field of interest.

  • A 3-credit Semester-long professional internship
