The Bachelor of Arts degree program provides a broad educational foundation to prepare students for industrial employment and pre-health professional training in medicine and pharmacy.  Certification for secondary education also requires the same coursework.

SPECIFICS OF THE CHEMISTRY B.A. DEGREE

Minimum Total Hours: 120

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 90

General Education Requirements: Per Core Curriculum Requirements list (see General Education Council). Exceptions: the lab science and mathematics proficiency requirements are met through the major.

Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.0; no grade less than C- in the major.

Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies.

Application to the Major: Standard institutional major application should be submitted at the end of the sophomore year.  A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required for acceptance to the major.

Major Requirements: 48 hours with a minimum of 30 hours in chemistry as follows:

  • Required chemistry courses: CHEM 1110*, 1110 lab, 1120, 1120 lab, 2110, 2110 lab, 2120, 2120 lab, 2210, 2310, 3040, 3110, 3110 lab;

  • Minimum of 2 hours in computer science: CSCI 1010 or 2010;

  • 8 hours of mathematics: MATH 2281* and 2282;

  • 8 hours of physics: PHYS 1001 and 1002 (or the 12-hour physics sequence PHYS 2001*, 2002).

*Passing a placement exam could be required before enrolling in some introductory courses. CHEM 1110R (0) will be required as a corequisite to CHEM 1110 if it is determined that additional support will benefit the student.

  

SPECIFICS OF THE CHEMISTRY B.S. DEGREE

The Bachelor of Science degree program is recommended for students who wish to pursue graduate programs, professional school programs, or industrial career fields such as pharmaceuticals, research and development, quality control, environmental monitoring, polymer synthesis, medical technology, or chemical engineering. 

Minimum Total Hours: 120

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 60

  • Required chemistry courses: CHEM 1110*, 1110 lab, 1120, 1120 lab, 2110, 2110 lab, 2120, 2120 lab, 2210, 2310, 3040, 3110, 3110 lab, 3120, 3120 lab, 4020, 4600, 4980;

  • One additional 4000-level chemistry course (3 hours): BCHE 3050, CHEM 4060 or 4200;

  • 4 hours of computer science: CSCI 2010;

  • 12 hours of mathematics: MATH 2281*, 2282, and 2283;

  • 8 hours of physics: PHYS 1001 and 1002 OR PHYS 2001*, 2002.
