The Comprehensive Science major is one option for students considering teaching general sciences.

SPECIFICS OF THE COMPREHENSIVE SCIENCE B.S. DEGREE

Minimum Total Hours: 120

Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 60

General Education Requirements: Per Core Curriculum Requirements list (see General Education Council). Exceptions: the lab science and mathematics proficiency requirements are met through the major.

Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.0; no grade less than C- in the major.

Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies.

Application to the Major: Standard institutional major application should be submitted at the end of the sophomore year.  A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required for acceptance to the major.

Major Requirements:  52-58 hours depending on the concentration selected.

• 3 hours of astronomy: NSCI 1200;
• 8 hours of biology with supporting labs:  BIOL 1110, 1120;
• 8 hours of chemistry with supporting labs:  CHEM 1110*, 1140;
• 4 hours of computer science:  CSCI 2010;
• 3 hours of Earth science: NSCI 1000;
• 4 hours of mathematics:  MATH 2281*;
• 8 hours of physics: PHYS 1001* and 1002 OR PHYS 2001* and 2002;
• Concentration: Select additional hours in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or physics to total 24 semester hours in one discipline.  At least 9 hours within the concentration must be 3000- or 4000-level courses.

Discipline-specific substitutions or requirements:

• Biology concentration may substitute MATH 2400 for 2281;
• Biology and Chemistry concentrations may substitute CSCI 1010 and 1030 for 2010;
• Chemistry concentration must take CHEM 1110 and 1120 and supporting labs;
• Physics concentration must take PHYS 2001, 2002, and 2003.

* Passing a placement exam could be required before enrolling in some introductory courses. CHEM 1110R will be required as a corequisite if it is determined that additional support will benefit the student.
